Museums & Collections
The Styrian museums are treasure troves of history. They reflect our history and are part of our regional and cultural identity. All (regional) museums pursue the goal of collecting the cultural heritage of Styria, preserving our shared history and telling the (hi)story of Styria by exhibiting representative objects. History has left its marks on every place in Styria, no matter how small.
The State of Styria supports the interest in museums as places for intergenerational encounters and regional cultural work. With this in mind, a realignment of the Museumsforum Steiermark, the service centre for regional museums and collections, was decided in 2021. Museumsforum Steiermark is part of the 100% subsidiary Universalmuseum Joanneum GmbH (UMJ). The cooperation between the State of Styria, the regional museums, the UMJ, the Styrian Museum Association Steirischer Museumsverband (MUSIS) and the Federation of Austrian Museums Museumsbund Österreich is a top priority of Museumsforum Steiermark. Targeted and needs-based funding models are developed and offered to strengthen the museum landscape.
The State of Styria also provides a database of collection items. The database is a tool for the preservation of knowledge and stories about the shared Styrian cultural heritage. All regional museums and collections that are open to the public and not operated by the State of Styria have access to this database called PantherWeb. PantherWeb creates a sustainable basis of information. It is important that the knowledge about the documented objects of museums is safeguarded and maintained for future generations. The regional and supra-regional exchange with Styrian museums, Austrian states (that offer a similar database), the Swiss Canton of Basel-Landschaft and the German State of Baden-Wurttemberg makes a far-reaching and large-scale analysis of people's collection behaviour possible.
